Marion County Humane Society News
Contributions May Save the Shelter!
Marion County Humane Society Board members are shaking their heads in awe at the
response they continue to receive after announcing that they may have to permanently
close their doors.  "You just don't know how much we appreciate all of this,"
commented President Nancy Securro at the October 10 board meeting, "you just don't
know...."

"Have we died and gone to Heaven?"mused board member Nancy Smigocki.  Donations
have been coming in from private donations and fundraisers organized by businesses,
organizations and individuals.  Treasurer Patty Vincent was touched by the envelopes
she received containing as little as $3.  "You know that donation came from someone's
heart - it's probably all they had to give."

The response from some of the schools in Marion County has been tremendous as well.
An East Fairmont Junior High School student organized a hat day that raised funds for
the shelter and sparked some competition with another county school.  Not to be
outdone by East Side students, West Fairmont Middle School students are organizing a
fundraiser and collecting supplies for the shelter. Other schools are taking action to
collect donations as well, including Rivesville and White Hall.

The Humane Society checking account is looking healthier, though they are still
operating on a month-to-month basis at this point.  The challenge now is to keep the
current level of community support going.  The survival of Marion County's only no-kill
shelter depends on sustained and ongoing support from volunteers and donations.
While Humane Society members are enjoying the support they are receiving now, they
look ahead with a feeling of suspense - wondering what happens when they are no
longer in the local headlines?

Marion County has made such an overwhelming effort to wrap their arms around the
county's only no-kill shelter.  The shelter truly belongs to the community now, and the
animals need that support to continue.

GREAT NEWS!!!- TOMMY AND SWEET CUJO ARE
ADOPTED  TOGETHER!!
Shelter workers and volunteers have been worrying about Tommy and Sweet Cujo since
they came in to the shelter together.  They have a special bond which became obvious
when they mourned for each other while they were separated to have their surgeries.
Workers and volunteers knew that our shelter manager, Lori (a.k.a. "Mother Bear"),
would not let these two be separated again, but the question remained - how likely is it to
have two full grown, large dogs adopted together?  Our question and prayers were
answered this week when a woman drove in from out of state, passed Lori's strict
screening and left with both dogs!  Good things are happening!!
